Malawi is in mourning following the tragic death of Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, who passed away on June 10, 2024. In her heartfelt tribute titled “A Visionary Soul That Serves,” Kaliati described Dr. Chilima as a tireless servant of the people, a beacon of integrity, and a rare gem whose leadership transcended political boundaries.
“A visionary soul of the soil that serves everyone all the time. A visionary soul never dies. It brings us together again and again,” Kaliati wrote.

About Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima Born on February 12, 1973, Dr. Saulos Chilima was a prominent Malawian economist and politician. Before entering politics, he held key leadership roles in the private sector, including as Managing Director of Airtel Malawi. He brought a technocratic and results-driven approach to governance.
Chilima was first elected Vice President of Malawi in 2014 under President Peter Mutharika. In 2018, he broke ranks with the ruling DPP and launched the United Transformation Movement (UTM), advocating for reform, youth empowerment, and anti-corruption.
In 2020, he formed an alliance with the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and was re-elected Vice President alongside President Lazarus Chakwera after a landmark court-ordered fresh election. His leadership style was characterized by charisma, boldness, and a deep connection with Malawi’s youth.
