A new political group called the Solidarity Alliance Party was launched in Mzimba last weekend. The party’s leader, Dr. Victor Madhlopa, said Malawi should stop using the current system of government and instead use federalism.
In his strong speech, Madhlopa said the way Malawi is governed now is not fair. He explained that development mostly goes to the region where the president comes from, leaving other areas behind. “We need to stop pretending this system is working,” he said. “Right now, development follows power, not need. We need a new way that lets every region decide for itself.”
Madhlopa wants Malawi to be split into different states. Each state would raise its own money and use it for its own needs. He said this is the only way places like the Northern Region can develop properly. “The North has fewer people, so it’s hard to get a president from here. But with federalism, each area can grow without needing to rely on a president,” he said.
Madhlopa also shared a big idea for Mzimba. If Malawi accepts federalism, Mzimba would become a kingdom ruled by Inkosi ya Makosi M’mbelwa, the top chief in the district. The area would also be divided into four smaller districts. “Mzimba is too large. Having only one hospital for such a big place is not right,” he said. “Smaller districts will mean people get to hospitals, schools, and other services faster and easier.”
The event in Mzimba is just the beginning. The party plans to visit other places like Zomba, Lilongwe, Blantyre, and Mzuzu soon. Dates will be shared later.
The Solidarity Alliance is new, but it’s already making a lot of noise in Malawi’s politics.
