President Chakwera Leads Solemn Tribute at Nthungwa Crash Site.

CHAKWERA

President Lazarus Chakwera is today expected to lead the nation in a somber memorial service honoring the late Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and others who tragically lost their lives in a military aircraft crash at Nthungwa in Chikangawa Forest, Nkhata Bay District.

The service, held under the theme “Blessedness of Unwavering Patriotism”, will unfold in two parts: an emotional pilgrimage to the crash site and a formal wreath-laying and prayer ceremony at the Lunjika turn-off in Mzimba District.

The President, joined by newly appointed Vice President Michael Usi, will first visit the crash site — located approximately four kilometers from the Lunjika junction — before proceeding to the main ceremony grounds. Officials have confirmed that the event will be private, with limited access to the public and media.

A military parade will feature prominently during the ceremony, symbolizing the state’s recognition of Chilima’s service and sacrifice. The solemn event also comes at a time when the nation continues to heal from the loss of one of its most dynamic political figures.

Dr. Saulos Chilima, known for his charismatic leadership and reformist vision, perished in the crash alongside several other officials while en route to a government function. The tragedy sent shockwaves across the country and beyond, prompting an outpouring of grief and unity.

  • The military aircraft crash that claimed Vice President Chilima’s life occurred in early June, under adverse weather conditions.
  • The late Vice President was widely respected for his bold stance on governance reforms and his efforts to engage youth in politics.
  • The memorial’s theme highlights the national pride in Chilima’s legacy and his steadfast service to the Malawian people.
