Minister Mumba Praised for Fighting Sugar Smuggling.

Lilongwe, Malawi – June 13, 2025. In a major breakthrough in the fight against sugar smuggling, security teams operating under the guidance of Minister of Trade and Industry, Honourable Mumba, apprehended a key suspect at 2:00 AM this morning believed to be at the centre of a syndicate smuggling sugar across the Zambian border.

The suspect, one of the notorious “mabale athu” middlemen, was caught red-handed with 300 bales of sugar—estimated to be worth over K17 million—ready to be transported illegally out of Malawi. He is currently in police custody and is expected to face charges soon.

This successful interception comes at a critical time when sugar production in Malawi has just resumed in full swing, following several weeks of delays due to an extended wet season. With supply now improving, Minister Mumba’s efforts are focused on addressing the second major challenge—rampant smuggling.

Smuggling has contributed significantly to sugar scarcity and price instability in local markets. In neighbouring countries like Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique, sugar prices are up to K40,000 higher per bale than in Malawi—creating a lucrative but illegal trade for smugglers. While issues of hoarding and under-the-counter sales persist, authorities believe these are often tactics to facilitate smuggling operations.

Despite efforts by some culprits to frustrate government operations—such as filing counter-reports when apprehended—Minister Mumba’s team remains undeterred. “They are throwing punches in the dark,” a source close to the operation commented. “Our mission is clear: protect Malawians from artificial shortages and price gouging.”

The Ministry has been receiving crucial tips from the public, enabling swift and targeted action. “We welcome actionable intelligence from citizens. It’s through community collaboration that we are making progress,” the source added.

Citizens and stakeholders have since praised Minister Mumba for his hands-on leadership and decisive action in curbing this economic sabotage. Many have described him as a dedicated public servant determined to safeguard the welfare of ordinary Malawians.

As efforts continue, the Minister’s team has reiterated its commitment to operate around the clock, ensuring that Malawi’s sugar stays in Malawi—affordable and available for all.
