Blantyre, Malawi —
A wave of spiritual transformation is sweeping across Malawi’s prisons, as hundreds of inmates undergo biblical training with hopes of becoming pastors and teachers of the Word — raising a critical question: will they be released to preach?
The Malawi Prison Service (MPS) has commended the efforts of Revive Bible School, which is currently offering theological education in all 29 prison stations across the country. According to National Prison Spokesperson Steve Meke, the initiative has already impacted at least 550 inmates in 12 stations — including high-security facilities — since its inception in 2023.
“The lessons are working wonders,” said Meke. “They are preparing and transforming inmates into better citizens, teachers of the Word, and even evangelists.”
In 2025, the Bible school is expanding its reach, targeting 1,500 more inmates across the remaining 17 stations. Each facility is expected to enroll about 50 participants, as the program gains momentum.
With these inmates earning certificates in ministry, the public and religious leaders alike are beginning to ask: What happens after graduation? Will these reformed prisoners be granted early release or special provisions to preach beyond prison walls?
Though the Malawi Prison Service has not made a formal statement on post-release opportunities for these trained ministers, Meke acknowledged the program’s long-term vision. “This transformation is not just for within the walls,” he said. “The school also runs 459 centres outside the prisons to support those who have completed their sentences and wish to continue in ministry.”
For many, this initiative offers a second chance — not just at life outside prison, but at becoming a source of hope and guidance in their communities. The Revive Bible School’s outreach is not only reshaping lives behind bars but challenging the nation to rethink rehabilitation, redemption, and the power of faith.
Whether these newly trained pastors will soon be seen in pulpits across Malawi remains to be seen — but their spiritual journey has already begun.
