A MERE VISITATION? : Malawi and Mozambique Strengthen Friendship with New Agreements

Malawi, Mozambique Seal New Era of Cooperation

Malawi and Mozambique have taken their strong friendship to a higher level. Today, Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera welcomed Mozambique’s new President, Daniel Chapo, on his first official visit to Malawi. The visit comes as the two countries celebrate 50 years of working together.

President Chakwera called it a “Golden Visit” and said it was not just about ceremony, but about making real progress. The two leaders signed several agreements to work together in areas like electricity, trade, tourism, transport, defense, technology, and emergency support.

One of the biggest announcements was the plan to set up One-Stop Border Posts at Mwanza and Dedza. These will help speed up the movement of people and goods between the two countries. President Chakwera jokingly called them “One-Go Border Posts.”

The two countries also agreed to continue working together on big transport projects, like the Nacala and Sena railway lines. The Sena Railway Line, which goes from Marka to Bangula, is nearly halfway done — about 46.5% complete — and the first train is expected in August 2025.

President Chakwera said Malawi wants to become a middle-income country by 2030, focusing on farming, tourism, and mining. He said Mozambique will help by increasing trade and energy support.

He also thanked Mozambique’s former president, Filipe Nyusi, for helping start important projects like the dry port in Nacala and the power connection between the two countries. Chakwera asked the current government to make fuel clearance at Beira faster to avoid delays.

At the end of the visit, President Chakwera said Malawi will always stand with Mozambique. He also said he hopes to visit Maputo after Malawi’s elections in September, which he promised will be peaceful and fair.

“Malawi and Mozambique are not just neighbours — we are family,” Chakwera said. “This is not the beginning — it is a golden continuation.”
